Object / Process (2009)

What is the ‘reality’ in the concert hall? Many people believe a performance in the concert happens in ‘real’ time, and this experience creates a sort of lively feeling. However, they may not think deeply about where this feeling is coming from, and naturally follow the rule of this space; what should focus and what should ignore. This embodied rule is constructed by the western classical music concert hall system. People only focus on the musical sound created by the performers and viewing or listening other sounds are not so important. Thus, the performer could be like a un-real symbolic “object”.

In this performance, a student and a voice tutor doing a lesson about the Japanese song move lips and piano playing in synchronization with the recorded sound. Firstly, the voices and the movement of their lips and movements are perfectly synchronized, but gradually they go out of sync. As a result, audiences would notice this gap between visual and sound. More precisely, the preconceptions that the voices should come from the performer’s body at the same time would be confused. It raises the question that 'what did I see and listen'.
